housing advice
Housing within North Cornwall District Council is divided into Private Housing and Council Housing. Information on Private Housing is found under Environmental Health at their website (link below), or by clicking here. Private Housing includes information on private rented accommodation, owner occupation, flats, bedsits etc. There is also information on Caravans and Caravan Sites; Loans and Disabled Facilities Grants. Council housing We deliver a comprehensive housing service covering everything from homeless people to managing the council's housing stock and helping develop more affordable homes in North Cornwall. We manage over 3,500 council homes which include flats, houses and sheltered accommodation. Our most up-to-date information on housing comes from Census data collected in 2001. A report on the housing information has been attached as a download document entitled "Housing" to the right of this page. How to apply for a council home From November 6th 2003 council house allocations will be done through the homefinder scheme, please use the link in the menu on the left for more information. Contact details for council house lettings, repairs and rents are given below. Affordable homes The shortage of affordable housing either to rent or buy is one of the key problems for local residents and one that we are seeking to address as a high priority. We are continuing to work closely with Housing Associations to provide more affordable homes in North Cornwall. In April 2002 there were 1,004 housing association properties in the district. Since then more affordable homes have been built including developments in Bude, Launceston and Bodmin. We are also developing a pilot scheme with some parish councils to provide affordable homes on exception sites on the edge of rural villages. Another exciting project is underway in Bude which should result in another 120 properties for rent or for controlled affordable sale over the next 3 - 5 years. By using our powers as a planning authority we also try to ensure that a percentage of new build developments remains affordable. Over the next three years we will be investing around £2.7m into the provision of affordable housing in North Cornwall. Sheltered Housing Service The Council has 636 sheltered units of accommodation which are managed by a team of 24 Wardens. We spend more than half a million pounds a year in providing a service which gives older residents from the district the opportunity to move into a smaller, secure and more suitable property.
